Harpur's Hill Primary School

Achieving Success Through Respect and Encouragement

Primary 6

New shoes, new uniform, new books, two new teachers and new opportunities! We hope that you had an enjoyable summer and are back, refreshed and ready to start the busy and exciting year ahead. Miss Quinn (Mon-Wed) Mrs Porter (Thurs-Fri).

This term our topic is The Solar System. We will be investigating the planets, moon and the stars. We will also be examining our environmental impact on Earth and the ways we can reduce our carbon footprint.

In literacy we hope to improve our study and research skills as we will be reading many non- fiction texts, focusing on skimming, scanning, note making and summarising skills. There will be many opportunities for talking and listening activities via our Poetry sessions - as we love to talk in P6! Our writing cycle is focusing on the genre of poetry. Our modelled, shared and guided writing projects will all be centred around our Topic work.

In maths we are investigating large numbers and revising some basic skills taught in P5, before we tackle long multiplication and number patterns. There will be lots of fun maths investigations and puzzles along the way!

Every Monday and Tuesday we will learn to code and use ICT to select, use and combine a variety of software (including internet services) on a range of digital devices to design and create.  We will accomplish given goals, including collecting, analysing, evaluating and presenting data and information using technology safely, respectfully and responsibly; recognise acceptable/unacceptable behaviour; identify a range of ways to report concerns about content and contact.

Primary Six is often said to be a "big" year and we hope to make it a big year of great work and lots and lots of fun!
