Let's Share and Celebrate Our Learning in Nursery
Personal, Social & Emotional Development
This month the children explored a wide range of feelings. Through stories, songs and play, they talked about being brave like firefighters and shared times when they felt frightened. They practised recognising emotions in themselves and others, helping them begin to understand different perspectives and develop empathy.
Language Development
The children built their emotional vocabulary by naming feelings and using descriptive words during circle time and songs. They practised listening to others and expressing themselves with greater confidence. Making silly faces encouraged them to link facial expressions with words, strengthening both verbal and non-verbal communication.
Physical Development
Through movement games and expressive play, the children used their bodies to show different emotions. They created big, exaggerated faces using gross-motor actions and practised fine-motor control when drawing feelings. Outdoor play supported confidence and resilience, helping them experience bravery through climbing, balancing and trying new physical challenges.
Early Mathematical Experiences
The children compared feelings using simple mathematical language such as “more,” “less,” “bigger,” and “smaller” when sorting emotion cards or matching faces. They explored patterns by sequencing feelings from happy to sad or calm to excited, developing early skills in classification, ordering and logical thinking.
The World Around Us
Children learned how people such as firefighters help us and show bravery. Discussions about real-life roles, safety equipment and community helpers deepened their understanding of the world. They explored how different situations can cause different feelings and noticed that everyone experiences emotions in their own way.
The Arts
Through music, drama and creative expression, the children explored feelings using songs, silly-face mirror work and role play. They enjoyed experimenting with colour and shape to represent emotions in artwork. Dramatic play allowed them to experiment safely with ideas of bravery and fear while developing imagination and creativity
