Harpur's Hill Primary School

Achieving Success Through Respect and Encouragement

Admission Policy

All pupils of compulsory primary school age will be admitted up to the enrolment figure set by the Department of Education. At present the enrolment number is set at 224 (excluding our Learning Support Centres which have an enrolment number set at 12 and our Nursery which has an enrolment number set at 26), with the maximum number of children admitted into Primary 1 set at 30.

Admission criteria for Cuilrath Corner Nursery to be used in the event of the unit being overscribed.  The criteria are listed in order of priority.

The statutory criteria set out by the Department will be applied to all valid applications received on the official application form by the published date in January.  In the event of the enrolment number being exceeded on the application of a statutory criterion the school will apply its own sub-criteria as set out below.

  1. Children whose older brother or sister currently attends Harpur’s Hill or St. Malachy’s Primary
  2. Children whose older brother or sister currently attends Cuilrath Corner Nursery and has enrolled for Harpur’s Hill or St. Malachy’s Primary
  3. Children who are the eldest or only child in the family
  4. Children who are resident in the Cross Glebe
  5. Children will be admitted on the basis of the initial letter of their legal surname as set out below:

Applicants should note that they may be required to produce documents verifying their address.

When considering which children should be selected for admission, the Board of Governors will only take into account information which is detailed on or attached to the application form. Parents should therefore ensure that all information pertaining to their child and relevant to the school’s admissions criteria is stated on the application form or attached to it.

.

Should a vacancy arise after 31st May, all applications for admission to Cuilrath Corner Nursery that were initially refused, new applications, late applications and applications where new information has been provided will be treated equally and the published criteria applied.  This waiting list will be in place until the end of the academic year.

The school and/or Education and Library Board will contact you, if your child gains a place in the unit by this method.

Your child's name will be automatically added to the list.  Please contact the school if you wish for your child's name to be removed from the list.

Criteria for children not in their final pre-school year.

Should places remain after the application of the above criteria to children in their final pre-school year, places will be allocated strictly in accordance with chronological age beginning with the eldest child.

Pupils may be admitted to Primary 2 to Primary 7 after consideration of the following criteria:

  1. A pupil will be considered for enrolment in Harpur’s Hill Primary School provided that the school does not exceed its enrolment number as determined by the Department of Education.
  2. A pupil may be admitted into the school provided that this would not prejudice the efficient use of school resources.
  3. A pupil may be accepted provided that, in the opinion of the Board of Governors, this would not prejudice the provision of efficient education to other children within the school.
  4. The Board of Governors may consider the needs of a particular pupil seeking entry to the school and will then decide whether it is in the pupil’s best interest to transfer.
